15: The 5 Hinderances

Meditation 15_St Lukes

The Five Hindrances (8.26.26 LIVE)
The afternoon that goes flat for no reason. The irritating conversation still running three hours later. The planning mind that won't stop even though nothing is being solved.

These are not bad days. They are five specific, recognizable patterns that contemplative traditions have been mapping for over two thousand years: sensory desire, ill will, sloth-torpor, restlessness-worry, and doubt. Each one is a particular way the mind covers clarity. Not extinguishes it. Covers it.

What changes when you have a name for a pattern is the relationship to it. It is no longer I am struggling or today is a bad day. It is: there is restlessness present. And in that small shift from identification to recognition, the gap that practice trains opens. The fire was never out. It was only covered.
